It will be a rematch of District 3-5A powers for tonight's Gateway
Conference championship after First Coast and Wolfson secured wins in the
semifinals at the FCCJ South campus gym on Thursday.
D'Angelo Fields scored 23 points to lead First Coast to a 57-51 win over
Englewood, and Wolfson broke away in the second half to beat Jackson 73-65
in the second semifinal.
Fields had three 3-pointers in the game, including a third-quarter shot
that put the Buccaneers (18-3) ahead for good.
"We didn't play that well in the first half," First Coast coach Charles
Showers said. "We talked about it at halftime, made some adjustments and
played good defense in the second half."
Darius Robinson scored 14 points for Englewood (17-8).
Wolfson (20-2) advanced to the conference final with a strong
fourth-quarter performance after struggling in the first half.
"The game changed when we came out in the second half," Wolfson coach
Bruce Rosebrock said. "We decided we were going to press them all over the
court. We threw three different presses on them and I think that was the
difference in the game."
Jackson (17-6) struggled from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter,
and the Wolfpack pulled away after Aaron Bowen hit a 3-pointer with 4:14
remaining to give his team a 66-59 lead.
Stacey Poole had 20 points to lead the Tigers.
Chris Rozier, who led Wolfson with 19 points, welcomed the opportunity
for a third meeting with the Bucs.
"We get a chance to play First Coast," he said. "It's a big rivalry."
