Wellington vs Boca Raton in Regional Semi-final
from palm beach post
Led by the return of star sophomore forward Natalie Punal, who missed
several matches because of injuries, the Wolverines are healthy and playing
their best soccer of the season.
Punal scored three goals in last week's 5-1 regional quarterfinal win
against Park Vista, and Wellington coach Fern Brewer expects Punal to play a
big role tonight.
"The key for us is going to be shooting, mainly Natalie shooting," Brewer
said. "If she gets the chance to take shots, then we shouldn't have a
problem scoring, but we have to outshoot them."
Boca Raton has been incredibly consistent all season. Led by goalkeeper
Caitlin Woody, the Bobcats have one of the area's top defenses, but to
unseat the Wolverines, they're going to need a balanced attack.
"We've played the last month of the season very well," Boca Raton coach
Rachel Grimes said. "Our defense has been very solid, but to beat them,
we're going to need to create some scoring opportunities early in the game."
While Wellington and Boca Raton were expected to be very strong this
season, the same can't be said about Pope John Paul II, which faces St.
Andrew's in a Class 3A matchup tonight. Despite playing one of the area's
toughest schedules, Pope is 18-5-1 entering tonight's match vs. the 14-3-1
Scots.
Pope is led by Brittany D'Addio, who leads the county with 103 points.
St. Andrew's, which is led by forward Laura Weinberg, has beaten the
Eagles two of the three times they've met this season. Most recently, the
Scots edged the Eagles 2-1 in overtime to capture the district championship.
"We're certainly going to have our work cut out for us tonight," Pope
coach Bill D'Addio said. "But this team has been surprising people all
season. What we lack in talent, we make up for with heart and
determination."
In other area matches tonight, American Heritage (20-3-2) will be the
heavy favorite as it hosts Boca Raton Christian (15-12); Merritt
Island-Edgewood will travel to take on King's Academy (20-4) and West Boca
Raton (16-5-2) plays host to Satellite.
