Weinberg leads Scots to victory
from Palm Beach Post
BOCA RATON — St. Andrew's, powered by four goals by its leading scorer,
Laura Weinberg, defeated Pope John Paul 8-1 in the regional semifinals at
St. Andrews.
The Scots (15-3-1), who also defeated Pope John Paul in a 2-1 district
overtime thriller last week, advance to play the winner of the Berkeley
Prep/St. Pete Catholic match in Friday's regional final.
"Pope is a great team - we just came out hungry," St. Andrews coach Stacy
Dent-Laciofano said.
Weinberg wasted no time, scoring her first goal off the post from 15
yards out five minutes into the game. She peppered Pope goalkeeper Lauren
Berlingo with three more shots on goal, which helped set up a corner kick in
the 29th minute.
Serra Tumay took the kick, and Emily Brockway headed it in for a 2-0
lead. Tumay assisted on another Weinberg goal two minutes later, and Lauren
Riley scored on a penalty kick to make it 4-0.
The Eagles (18-6-2) scored their goal on a wild sequence just before
halftime. Katie Capobianco drilled a high shot off the bottom of the
crossbar, which bounced off Scots goalkeeper Catalina Perez and was
deflected into the net by Morgan Currie.
Pope, however, was dealt a blow midway through the second half when
Berlingo suffered a kick to the head and had to be taken to the hospital.
Coach Bill D'Addio said it appeared to be a concussion.
The Scots got two quick goals by Tumay and Shannon Needleman to make it
8-1.
Weinberg left at the 30-minute mark of the second half after receiving a
yellow card and experiencing pain in her shoulder. Dent-Laciofano said
Weinberg will play Friday.
Perez and the Scots held Brittany D'Addio, the county's leader in total
points, scoreless.
"I think we were underestimated this year, and that's really helped us,"
Dent-Laciofado said.
