Vollmer Earns SSC Honor
Florida
Southern's latest award winner is
Kristen Vollmer,
who was named the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Week on
Monday following shutout victories over Tampa and Lynn. The junior defender
from Zephyrhills also assisted two goals and helped keep the Moccasins three
points ahead of Florida Tech in the SSC standings.
In their two games last week, both against conference
competition, the Moccasins blanked Tampa 3-0 on Friday, and Lynn 2-0 on
Sunday. During those games, the Florida Southern defense allowed only six
shots on goal (22 total) and picked up their sixth and seventh shutouts of
the year to tie the school record for one season. The Mocs allowed only two
shots on goal in the win at Tampa, and Vollmer helped preserve the shutout
by blocking a shot inside the box late in the match. She had an even bigger
game against Lynn, as she helped limit the Knights to only nine total shots,
and the league's second-leading scorer, Melissa Ortiz, was held to just two
shots from outside the box.
Vollmer also assisted both Moccasin goals during the win,
one in each half, and gave the Mocs several other scoring chances as well to
put Lynn's defense under steady pressure throughout the day. The final
result gave Florida Southern its fourth shutout in six SSC games this
season.
Overall, the Moccasins have a 1.13 goals against average
for the season, which is currently the second lowest in team history.
Florida Southern is on the road for two games this week,
one against the University of Montevallo on Tuesday, and the other at Saint
Leo on Saturday. The Moccasins will also find out on Wednesday where they
stand in the first NCAA regional rankings of the season. The top six teams
in that poll earn spots in the South Region Tournament at the end of the
season, with the SSC champion earning an automatic bid.
