WINTER PARK - A trip to the state
finals will have to wait for Trinity Prep.
The Saints — who have advanced through the region tournament in each of
the past five seasons but never reached the final four — fell to Ocala
Trinity Catholic 2-1 in the 3A, Region 2 championship game on Friday
night.
With the win, Trinity Catholic (23-3-2) earns its first-ever final four
berth.
"We just didn't seem to have it tonight," said Joe Raymond, Trinity Prep's
coach. "You could kind of tell it was going to be one of those nights from
the beginning."
The game-winning goal for Trinity Catholic was scored with
about eight minutes to go.
A corner kick sent the ball into the box, and there were several players
from each team huddled around the ball.
After the ball bounced around several times between players, Trinity
Catholic's Megan Menton emerged from the pack and sputtered the ball into
the net.
Trinity Prep's Kate Danagher struck the ball into the top-left corner of the
net from about 25 yards out, tying the game at 1-1 early in the second half.
Shivana Bahl assisted.
It was a memorable season for Trinity Prep (16-6-1).
After losing to Lake Highland in each of the past five seasons, the Saints
finally knocked off the Highlanders in the regional semifinals on Tuesday.
"We might've had a little bit of hangover from beating Lake Highland,"
Raymond said.
