Tars Unable to Land Sharks in Double Overtime Draw

Box Score

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (October 13, 2009) - The ninth-ranked Rollins women's soccer team muffled the Nova Southeastern Sharks 21-7 on the shot count, but were unable to find their usual stride as they battled the Sharks to a 2-2 tie in double-overtime action on Tuesday evening at the NSU Soccer Complex.

With their second draw of the season, the Tars move to an overall mark of 9-1-2 and stay undefeated in conference action with a record of 3-0-1, while Nova advances in their season with a record of 6-4-1, and 3-2-1 in SSC play.

The Tars found themselves trailing 1-0 in the 11th minute of regulation after a goal from NSU's Elisa Cabot, but junior forward Chelsea Brady was taken down in the box just two minutes later, setting up a penalty kick opportunity for Rollins at the 13:38 mark.  Junior defender Leah Hirsch stepped up to put the Tars on the scoreboard as she fired her third penalty kick of the season past Nova goalkeeper Sarah Glass to snag the Tars' first equalizer of the evening.

The Sharks collected their second goal late in the 16th minute after a shot from Aubrey Fondy found its way into the goal after ricocheting off the crossbar to give NSU their second lead of the contest, and Rollins found themselves trailing by one entering into the halftime break with a score of 2-1.

Senior midfielder Rachel Jakubowski connected on an assist from Jessica Deese 13 minutes into the second half to strike a hard ball on frame amidst a sea of defenders to give the Tars their second equalizer of the contest.  As the minutes ticked down on the game clock the Tars found themselves in a stalemate with the Sharks, forcing the contest into overtime.

After two overtime periods of scoreless action from both teams, the Tars accepted their second double-overtime tie of the season and walked away with a final score of 2-2.

The Tars were able to set up opportunities on frame as they out-shot Nova 21-7, led in shots on goal 9-5, and had more corner-kick opportunities as they headed-up the stats 8-1.  However, with an unrestrained NSU squad laying the fouls on 14-8, Rollins found themselves unable to capitalize on their offensive breaks.

Rollins will recollect and look to their next contest where they will take on Sunshine State Conference foe Lynn University in a home contest at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur Field.  Kickoff against the Fighting Knights is set for Saturday, October 17, at 7:00 p.m.  Fans who can't make it to the game can catch all of the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
