WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 1, 2009) -  The eleventh-ranked Rollins women's soccer team picked up their second shutout in a row as they defeated the Lady Reds of Carthage College in a 2-0 decision Tuesday evening at Barker Family Stadium in Winter Park, Fla.  The Lady Reds open their season with a record of 0-1, while the Tars remain perfect on their young season with an overall mark of 2-0.

Headlining for the Tars in their first home match of 2009 were junior Leah Hirsch and fresh face Annie Pippert who tallied one goal apiece, with Pippert finding an assist from senior Joy Powell in the 77th minute to strike the ball from the top of the box into the left corner to earn her first goal of her Rollins career.

Hirsch put the Tars up on the board in the 57th minute of action with a long, hard free kick from outside of the 18 over the head of Carthage goalkeeper Angela Spinelli to grab the game-winning goal of the evening, and her second of the season.

A stingy defensive unit held the Lady Reds to just five shots and two shots on goal all evening, which sophomore standout goalkeeper Michelle Dillingham denied with two solid saves.  Steadfast in the midfield, senior duo Jessica Mooney and Rachel Jakubowski found support from a steadfast back line of Meagan Thomas, Charlotte Murrell, Maia Ryan, and Hirsch, who kept Carthage from any corner kick opportunities in the full 60 minutes of play.

The Tars peppered a weathered Carthage defense throughout the whole contest, firing off 29 shots and nine shots on goal.  Freshman fireball Elise Spearing headed-up the firing squad with eight total shots, while sophomore midfielder Ashley Waplinger and Hirsch had four attempts apiece.  Pippert followed close behind with three total shots, two on goal, and seven other Tars had at least one shot attempt to round out the count on the evening.

The Lady Reds were led by goalkeeper Angela Spinelli throughout the contest, as her seven saves helped her team stay in contention.  Sarah Scardamaglia, Kelsey Harrington, Shannon Chesna, Rachel Jason, and Jen Carlson all had solid shots on the evening.

The Tars commanded the stats in all areas as they sailed through the evening, holding a solid lead in shots 29-5 and corner kicks 5-0.

The Tars will hit the road for their next two contests, traveling west to San Antonio, Texas where they will take on No. 6 Incarnate Word on Friday, September 4 in a 7:00 p.m. Eastern/6:00 p.m. Central showdown, followed by a matchup against Abilene Christian on Sunday, September 6, at 12:00 p.m. Eastern/11:00 a.m. Central contest.  Fans will be able to catch livestats and listen to all of the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
