With a game-winning
goal from
Meagan Thomas, the Rollins women's soccer team advances to the third
round of NCAA Division II Tournament action for the second-straight season
after dropping the Florida Tech Panthers 3-0 on Saturday evening.
The Tars (16-1-2) set their sights on Friday, November 20, where they
look to take on the winner of the North Alabama/West Florida game, to be
played on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Allowing the Tars to advance was sophomore goalkeeper
Michelle Dillingham with nine saves on the evening after facing 13
shots from the Panthers (15-4-1). Joined by her steadfast back line of
Leah Hirsch,
Maia Ryan,
Charlotte Murrell, and Thomas, the Tars notch their 13th shutout of
the season.
Thomas kick-started the Tars' scoring spree off of a corner kick
opportunity in the 31st minute of action. Sophomore
Ashley Waplinger sent a short kick in to
Chelsea Brady, setting up a cross into the box where Thomas was able
to send a lofty header past FIT goalkeeper Melissa Pyles.
Rollins saw two goals in the second half from junior forward duo
Jessica Deese and Brady, while Waplinger, Brady and
Jessica Mooney tallied assists on the evening to complete the scoring
efforts for the Tars.
The showdown kicked off evenly matched, with both teams pouring on
offensive pressure at any given opportunity. But the Tars were able to
grab hold of some momentum 15 minutes into the game thanks to smart
decisions from senior midfielders
Rachel Jakubowski and Mooney, and with their intelligent actions the
Tars began to dictate the pace of play.
Thomas' goal ignited the game for Rollins, allowing them to hold the
upper hand as they entered into the break and explode into the second half
with continued fervor as they continued to control the game in all areas
of the field.
On paper, both teams came out of the game evenly matched, with FIT
leading the shot count 13-11, as well as in shots on goal 9-8.
Dillingham's counterpart was only able to grab five saves on the evening
in comparison to her nine, which proved to play a big part in the outcome.
Rollins will have less than a week to prepare for the third round of
the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament. For the latest on all of
