St. Johns CD cruises to state
from jacksonville.com
The St. Johns Country Day girls soccer team used its overwhelming attack
to power to its sixth consecutive Region 1-2A title on Friday night with a
5-0 victory over visiting Tallahassee Maclay.
The Marauders (17-5-2) packed their backfield for most of the match, but
the Spartans worked their way through for four scores, adding a fifth on a
Tyler Law penalty kick.
"Teams are trying to prevent us from getting in behind them," SJCD coach
Mike Pickett said. "You have to coach how to beat this style of defending,
but we are running into it a lot."
That's because the Spartans (21-2-2) haven't allowed a goal in regional
play in three years, going a combined 58-0 in their last nine regional
playoff matches.
Annie Bobbitt kicked off SJCD's rout on Friday with a score on a cross
from Kaili Torres in the fourth minute. Freshman Carson Pickett followed
with a header on a cross from Kara Moore, and 25 minutes in, eighth-grader
Mallory Bane made it 3-0 when she beat the keeper and finished a goal into
the empty net.
Law scored on a cross from Bobbitt to put the Spartans up 4-0 at the
half.
The victory secures SJCD, which won Class 2A state titles in 2005 and
2007, a spot in next week's state semifinals. The Spartans will face West
Palm Beach King's Academy, a 2-0 regional final winner over Lakeland
Christian, on Wednesday in Tampa
