Rollins Picks up Sixth Shutout
Box Score
ST.
AUGUSTINE, Fla. (September 16, 2009) - The
twelfth-ranked Rollins women's soccer team shut out its sixth opponent in
just seven games as the Tars trounced Flagler College 5-0 in St.
Augustine, Fla. on Wednesday evening.
Leading the team once again was junior forward
Chelsea Brady as she racked-up five points on the evening with two
goals and an assist. Fellow junior
Mellissa Doerk put up one goal and one assist, while
Leah Hirsch and
Ashley Waplinger fired the ball between the pipes for one goal
apiece. Rounding out the points on the evening was senior midfield duo
Jessica Mooney and
Rachel Jakubowski, who each found assists on Brady's two goals.
Between the pipes for the Tars, sophomore
Michelle Dillingham had a quiet evening thanks to an almost
impenetrable midfield and defensive squad. Rollins' back end limited the
Saints to just six shots all evening, and only one shot in the first
half. Dillingham never saw a shot on goal in the full 90 minutes of
action, but was a solid force anchoring the team all evening.
Rollins was largely headed-up by Mooney and Jakubowski, who each
hustled through 80 minutes of in-game action as they helped lead the Tars
in all areas of their attacking and defensive strategies. The duo set up
key plays throughout the evening, helping Rollins pepper Flagler
goalkeeper Christie Reuther with 14 shots on goal.
Waplinger kick-started the scoring for the Tars in the eighth minute of
action as she collected on a pass from Doerk for a quick shot from the top
of the box for the game-winning goal of the evening. Seven minutes later,
Brady snatched up a pass from Jakubowski and dribbled down field around
two defenders to kick a rocket of a shot past Reuther to put the Tars up
2-0.
Doerk and Brady teamed up again in the 18th minute of play, allowing
Doerk to dance around her defenders for a solid shot between the pipes to
give the Tars a comfortable 3-0 advantage leading into the half.
The Tars took some time to find their pace in the second half, and
finally put more points on the scoreboard as a foul in Rollins' offensive
box set Hirsch up for a penalty kick at the 68 minute mark. Hirsch's shot
screamed past Reuther and ricocheted off the crossbar down to the line,
giving the Tars their fourth tally of the night.
Brady closed out the evening for Rollins just a minute and a half later
as she found a quick pass from Mooney and took it down the right wing,
scoring her second goal of the evening after working her way around two
defenders. Rollins led in all areas of the field as they outshot Flagler
18-6, and led 5-4 in corners. The Saints put up a fight as they racked up
11 fouls in comparison to Rollins' nine for the evening.
The Tars will have a week to prepare for their Sunshine State
Conference opener against Saint Leo University on Wednesday, September
23. Kickoff against the Lions is set for 7:30 p.m. at University Field in
Saint Leo, Fla. Fans will be able to catch all of the action live on the
Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
