Picketts 5 Points Lead Spartans Past Lions
Tampa-St. Johns Country Day's Carson
Pickett's 3 assists and 1 goal helped lead the Spartans past King's Academy
4 to 0 to advance to the Florida Girls High School Soccer State Finals. The
Spartans took control of the game early with a goal from sophomore Tyler Law
off a corner kick from Pickett just one and a half minutes in to the game.
"Once you score that first goal, you just have that feeling that you know
we've got this, and it's our game," Law said.
Annie Bobbitt scored with 27 min left in the
half and Kaili Torres would score less than 2 minutes later. Both goals came
off of assists from Pickett. In the second half Torres would return the
favor by feeding Pickett with 34:44 remaining. "We have a lot of young
girls, so we had to really take it to the next level ... because almost half
our team hasn't been here before," Carson Pickett said. "We knew we had to
get the first couple goals early, so that they would just settle down,
because they were really nervous before the game."
Even though the score was 4 to 0 we never gave up said Lions
midfielder Gilda Doria
"Our game plan was to come out and press them and score
early. Getting down early threw us out of that game plan." said
King's Academy Coach Gen Martin. "I told the girls that you get 12 hours to
mourn the loss and then look forward to next season and learn from the
experience."
St. John's returns to the State Finals where they will meet
American Heritage. AHD knocked the Spartans out last season in the state
semi-finals "We had a hard fight last year and lost in double overtime to
American Heritage in just a great physical soccer game," Pickett said of
last season's 1-0 state semifinal loss. "It was a tough one to lose. We've
had those pictures up in our locker room for a year. They see it every time
they walk in to change."
