Oviedo Blows By University
OVIEDO - The Oviedo girls soccer team used a flurry of first-half goals to
knock off University 6-0 in a Class 6A region quarterfinal on Thursday
night.
The Lions, who lost in the state championship game last season, scored three
goals in less than four minutes to put the game out of reach before the
first half even ended.
"It just happened to click and we were in the right place at the right
time," Oviedo Coach Scott Waisanen said. "We kept pressuring them on defense
and then capitalized on the opportunities when they came."
The first of the scoring outburst came when Oviedo was already up 1-0.
In the 27th minute Lindsay Osburn scored, three minutes later Katie
O'Kennedy put the Lions up 3-0, and then less than 30 seconds later Colleen
O'Kennedy followed her sister's lead to put the Lions up 4-0.
Oviedo (23-1-1) will now move on to face the winner of tonight's game
between Winter Park and Lake Mary.
The match between the Wildcats and the Rams was originally scheduled for
Thursday night but was postponed due to inclement weather.
"We know either team is really good and either team is going to present a
different challenge for us," Waisanen said when asked which team he
preferred to see on Tuesday.
Oviedo got its first goal of the game in the sixth minute when Kara
Mundelein punched in a goal from inside the University box.
The most spectacular play of the game came on Katie O'Kennedy's goal.
The sophomore dribbled past two defenders and used a shake-and-bake move to
avoid the University goalkeeper.
Megan Pando tacked on a late insurance goal for the Lions in the 65th
minute.
Osburn scored her second goal of the game in the 77th minute.
