St. Johns Country Day girls soccer players aim national
from jacksonville.com
Four members
of the St. Johns Country Day Varsity Girls Soccer Team -- sophomores Kaili
Torres, Annie Bobbitt and Sarah Voigt and freshman Carson Pickett -- are
well on their way to becoming members of the U.S. National Team.
The national team selection process starts with a local tryout, then a
state tryout and on to the Regional Camp in Alabama, where 500 girls battle
for one of the 30 spots, said a news release.
The girls chosen for the regional pool travel all over the country for
camps, where all four U.S. regions gather to train for a week at a time.
Some players also travel overseas to play, all for the possible chance at
being selected as a National Team member and a chance to represent the
United States in a World Cup, the release said.
n Torres was invited to her first National Camp in Sunrise, held Jan.
28-Feb. 5. She also played for the Puerto Rican U17 National Team last
summer in the World Cup Qualifier in Trinidad and Tobago.
n Bobbitt made the Region III Team over Thanksgiving 2008 at a seven-day
camp held in Coral Springs. Since then, she was named the Region III captain
and will head to Norway with the team in the spring, the release said.
n Voigt was invited to the exclusive ESP Camp run by former National Team
Coach and World Cup Gold Medalist Tony DiCicco. This camp identifies the top
50 players in her age group who trained in California Feb. 19-23.
n Pickett was invited to the Inter-Regional Developmental Camp in
California, held Feb. 17-22, a positional training camp for all four
regions, and to play on the Norway-bound team.
More than 80 colleges, including Notre Dame, FSU, Florida, Duke, UCLA,
Virginia and Texas A&M, have made inquiries about these and other members of
the St. Johns team, Varsity Girls Soccer Coach Mike Pickett said in the
release.
The team recently won a state championship, topping two earlier titles in
2005 and 2007
