Florida's Morgan Brian Scores Game Winner in U-17
Victory over Argentina
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Dec. 9, 2009) –
Morgan Brian, the only
holdover from the U.S. team that finished second at the 2008 FIFA U-17
Women’s World Cup and team captain, scored her second goal of the tournament.
Other Florida girls playing for the Florida team are, from Morgan's club
team the Ponte Vedra Storm,
Kaili Torres and
Annie Bobbitt. Bryane
Heaberlin of the Clear water Chargers is the team goal keeper.
The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team continued to roll during its trip
to Argentina, defeating the host country’s U-20 Women’s National Team by a
4-1 score. The USA defeated Chile’s U-17s 7-0 on Dec. 7. The Americans
actually fell behind in 21st minute, but quickly equalized just one minute
later as forward Alesha Blair controlled a bouncing ball and dribbled into
the left side of the penalty area before smashing her shot off the right
post and in from eight yards out. The game went into halftime knotted at
1-1, but the USA struck for two goals in three minutes starting in the 58th
when Morgan Brian nailed a direct free kick from 22 yards out. The ball
deflected off the Argentinean wall and flew into the left side of the net
out of the reach of the ‘keeper. Two minutes later, halftime substitute
Jennifer Gonzalez ran onto a through ball from Kaysie Clark, dribbled around
the ‘keeper and slotted home from eight yards away. The USA added a final
goal in the 73rd minute as Blair dribbled into the left side of the box
toward the post, sucked the ‘keeper in and then slid a ball across the goal
mouth that was knocked in by an Argentinean defender. The USA has two games
remaining in Argentina, facing the Argentina U-17s on Dec. 11 and then a
combined U-17/U-20 squad from Uruguay on Dec. 13.
