2009 WPSL ALL-REGION TEAM
Ohio Premier's Robertson (L) nets top GK honors for 2nd year; Miami's
Perry (R) & Miceli honored for team's Final Four run
SACRAMENTO, CA (07/29/09) - A lot has been talked about the traditional
conference powerhouses in the East & Pacific Conferences of the Women's
Premier Soccer League (WPSL) with the 2009 Final Four commencing this
weekend in Long Island. However, the less-informed must remember that the
WPSL champions have come out of the Midwest Conference twice in the last
four years, and in the 2007 National Semifinal, a resolute Tampa Bay side
from the Sunshine Conference pushed an undefeated & internationally-ranked
New England side to penalty kicks.
The Miami Kickers F.C. (8-1-2) will be the so-called underdogs going into
their Final Four Semifinal match this Saturday at Adelphi University's
Competition Field in Garden City, NY. However, when it came to the WPSL
All-Region awards (for the Midwest & Sunshine Conferences), their head coach
Marc Miceli and star pupil April Perry (7g, 1a) would take home Coach &
Player of the Year honors respectively, as their team will now travel north
up the East Coast for this weekend's National Championship.
Miami clinched the bid to the 2009 WPSL Final Four due to their 2-0 Regional
Final victory over a then-undefeated Midwest champion Ohio Premier Women's
S.C. squad last weekend in Plantation, FL. OPWSC can gain some consolation
as their top-notch shot-stopper in Ohio State University's Lauren Robertson
would garner Goalkeeper of the Year honors for the second straight year.
Players to look out in the future (not just in the WPSL but the world of
women's soccer): F.C. St. Louis' Katya Hessel (honored for 2nd straight
year)... OPWSC'S Robertson... Miami's Perry. For the full list of the 2009
