Melbourne shuts out East Bay

MELBOURNE — This time, Melbourne's players say, they will walk into the state tournament as if they were strolling into a mall.

The Bulldogs advanced to the state's biggest setting for the second straight year by blasting East Bay 8-0 Friday night in a Class 6A region final. Freshman Rachel Price led the assault with three goals off the bench as the game ended 12 minutes early because of the mercy rule.

"They're a stellar team," East Bay coach Claudine Sosa said. "They have everything."

Melbourne (21-0-1) received goals from six players. The Bulldogs have outscored five postseason opponents a combined 29-1.

Sosa said East Bay (13-4-2) did not know it would be playing Friday on an artificial surface. The Indians were trying to earn their second state tournament berth.

"I'm proud of this team," Sosa said. "People counted us out a long time ago."

Andrea Owens made nine saves as the Indians were outshot 23-1. East Bay's lone attempt was a long try in the 58th minute.
