TALLAHASSEE,
Fla. - For the second week in a row and third time this year, a Florida
State student-athlete grabbed weekly honors from the Atlantic Coast
Conference. This week
Tiffany McCarty was named ACC Player of the Week after leading the
Seminoles to a pair of wins over fellow top 10-ranked league opponents.
McCarty registered five points on two goals and an assist as Florida
State (9-1-0) edged No. 9 Maryland by a 2-1 score on Thursday followed with
a 3-2 victory over No. 3 Boston College on Sunday.
In the win over Maryland, McCarty broke a scoreless tie in the 18th
minute by sneaking a low liner inside the right post for the goal. The
Laurel, Md., native followed with a goal and an assist against Boston
College. McCarty gave the Seminoles a 2-1 lead scoring her team leading
ninth goal of the season in the 23rd minute against the Eagles. She later
assisted on
Jessica Price's game-winner in the 73rd minute to give FSU the lead for
good. McCarty created the scoring chance making a long run down the field
before finding Price on a chip pass in the box. It was her first
game-winning assist of the season and second of her career.
McCarty, who was also named to the Soccer America, Top Drawer Soccer
National Teams of the Week and
Girls
Soccer USA Elite Performers of the Week, finished the two games with a
team-leading seven shots, including five shots on goal.
FSU is now 5-0 against ranked opponents in 2009, including a perfect 4-0
record against teams ranked in the top 10. Both the Terps and Eagles were
unbeaten prior to facing the Seminoles.
With two wins to open league play, the Seminoles have started 2-0-0 in
the ACC for just the second time in school history. FSU opened the 2001
campaign with a 3-0-0 mark.
McCarty joins fellow teammates
Toni Pressley (September 22) and
Jessica Price (September 8) as recipients of ACC Player of the Week
honors in 2009.
McCarty and the Seminoles return to action this Sunday, October 4 against
intra-state rival Miami. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Seminole
Soccer Complex. FSU will wear pink jerseys for the game in honor of Breast
Cancer Awareness.
