Lakeland Christian Outlasts Master's
Academy
In a game where the only 2 goals were scored on penalty
kicks it was only fitting that the game would be decided by pks after ending
tied 1 to 1 after double over time. Before the water break Masters Academy
was leading the charge with most of the possession in their attacking third.
After the water break Lakeland Christian would be the aggressor. Neither
team would capitalize on their opportunities and the first half would end in
a scoreless tie.
For most of the game the Eagles leading goal scorer
Katie Woodall would be kept in check by the swarming Vikings defense. But,
early in the second half Katie would get her best opportunity of the night.
Woodall received the ball on the left side and shot a rocket that ricocheted
harmlessly off the cross bar.
The first goal of the night would be scored by Master
Academy’s Ashley Vezina in the 56th minute off of a penalty
kick. The second goal of the night was scored by Shelby Pierce in the 68th
minute also after a penalty kick. On a somewhat questionable call a penalty
kick was awarded when Master Academy’s Danielle Garzon and Lakeland
Christian’s Sydney Rayborn got tangled up just inside the 18. Garzon would
be red carded on the play.
Playing down a man Master’s Academy would be kept on
their heels by the Vikings through the rest of regulation and the first
overtime. In the second overtime the Eagles would dominate play and come
close to ending the game
a few times including a breakaway with only seconds left.
The game would be settled by Penalty Kicks. Lakeland
Christian would win in pks 3 to 2 when the Viking keeper, Jessica Thomas,
saved the Eagles final pk opportunity by Ashley Vezina.
Lakeland Christian will play King's Academy, who beat
Edgewood also in penalty kicks, for the Region Finals on Friday Feb. 6th.
