Lady Argos Shutout Bucs 2-0
Box Score
MIAMI
SHORES, Fla. — On a warm humid night in south Florida the No. 2
University of West Florida women’s soccer team battled Barry to a 2-0
victory in a hard fought match from both sides. Team leading scorer
Shakira Duncan
(Kingston, Jamaica/Darton College) netted her 10th goal of the season in the
win. She has now scored at least one goal in each of the Argos first eight
games.
In what has become an all too familiar sight on offense,
Shaneka Gordon
(Old Harbour, Jamaica/Community College of Baltimore) and Duncan connected
in 37th minute to put the Lady Argos on top 1-0. Gordon sent a cross in from
the left side where Duncan would collect it in front of goal. On one touch
Duncan put it into the near post past Bucs keeper Emily Pratt for the 1-0
lead.
In the second half the Bucs defense was tested as the Argos fired off 15
shots in the half. West Florida saw many opportunities to put one in frame
but the Bucs defense would quickly squander any opportunities. Midway
through the second half a hard foul inside the box on
Dernelle Mascall (Basse
terre, Moruga, Trinidad/Mobile) called for a West Florida penalty kick.
Mascall would take the kick and blast one bottom shelf to the left post for
a 2-0 West Florida lead.
The Argos outshot the Bucs by a count of 20-4 as well as held the
advantage in corner kicks 10-1. Mascall saw the most action tonight for
the Argos as she fired four shots, putting three on frame with a goal
scored.
The Lady Argos final test of the weekend will come Sunday afternoon when
they square off with Nova Southeastern at 1pm ET.
