 No. 1 Lady Argos Repeat As GSC Champions

Fla. – The top ranked University of West Florida women’s soccer
team took down Gulf South Conference rival North Alabama 4-1 in Sunday
afternoon’s GSC Championship match to claim their second straight GSC title.
Shaneka Gordon led
the attack for the Lady Argos with two first half goals, giving them the
early lead.
Gordon set the tone of the match early on as she put the Argos on top
with her first goal of the match just two minutes in. Her second goal of the
match would seal the Lady Argos fate as GSC Champions. In the 22nd minute
Gordon took a pass from
Dernelle Mascall
in the middle of the box, dribbled around a pair of defenders and fired one
to the back of the net to give the Argos a 2-0 lead.
North Alabama would not go down silently as Stephanie Bradshaw got the
Lions on the board with her fifth goal of the season in the second half. On
the Lion’s only corner kick of the match, Bradshaw found an opening and
headed one past keeper
Courtney Jones to cut the Argos lead in half, 2-1.
The Lion’s goal created a spark in the West Florida attack as Derenlle
Mascall netted her 12 goal of the season just two minutes later on a penalty
kick. With the goal, Mascall tied Brianna Oeser for first place in the UWF
record book with her 54 career goal. The Argos would tack on another goal
late in the match to put the score 4-1 in favor of the Argos.
The win gives the Argos their second straight GSC Championship and sixth
in program history. The Argos also claimed four All-Tournament Team
selections, led by Most Outstanding Player,
Kaley Morris ().
It marks the fourth straight year that the Lady Argos boast the tournament’s
Most Outstanding Player.
Shaneka Gordon,
Shakira Duncan
and Dernelle Mascall
round out the All-Tournament team selections for West Florida.
Tomorrow evening the NCAA will host their selection show at 6pm CT to
determine the regional pairings for next weekend’s regional tournament.
