No. 1 Lady Argos Earn Eight All-GSC Selections
BIRMINGHAM,
Ala. – The top ranked West Florida women’s soccer team continues
their impressive season as eight players have been named to the Gulf South
Conference all-conference squads. A league high five players will represent
the Argos on the All-GSC First Team led by
Shakira Duncan
(Kingston, Jamaica/Darton College) and
Shaneka Gordon
(Old Harbour, Jamaica/Community College of Baltimore).
Joining Duncan and Gordon on the first team is defender
Kaley Morris (Gulf
Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze HS) and midfielders
Marcela Franco
(Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Visconde de Porto Seguro) and
Dernelle Mascall (Basse
terre, Moruga, Trinidad/Mobile). Rounding out the Argos selections on the
All-GSC Second Team is defender
Shameka Gordon
(Old Harbour, Jamaica/Community College of Baltimore), goalkeeper
Courtney Jones
(Panama City, Fla./Bay HS) and midfielder
Jodi Galucci
(Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS).
Duncan leads the way for West Florida claiming her first All-GSC honor. A
junior college transfer in her first season with the Argos, she has broke
school records for points (65) and goals scored (27) in a season. She is
currently the NCAA Division II leader in points per game (3.82) and goals
per game (1.588) while also ranking 12th in assists per match (.65). On the
season she has claimed a league high four GSC Player of the Week awards
including the past three handed out.
Gordon, the 2008 GSC Player of the Year, earns her second career All-GSC
First Team honor. On the team she currently ranks second in goals (22) and
points (61) while leading the team in assists (17). In the national
statistics she is ranked behind Duncan as the number two points per game
leader in the country (3.59), eighth in goals per game (1.294) and is the
top assist leader in NCAA Division II (1.0).
Rounding out the pack of First Team selections are Morris, Franco and
Mascall. Morris collects her first career All-GSC First Team selection after
an outstanding four year career as a defender for the Argos. Earlier this
season she collected her third career GSC Defender of the Week award.
After missing last season’s All-GSC teams, Mascall comes back with a strong
performance in 2009 to earn her second career All-GSC First Team honor, her
first since 2007. This season Mascall has put her name in the record books
by becoming the program’s all-time points leader (138) and is currently one
goal shy of tying the career goals record of 54.
Franco becomes just the fourth West Florida women’s soccer player to earn
All-GSC First team honors three times in her career. On the season she has
tallied 10 goals with four assists for 24 points.
Representing the Argos on the second team are
Shameka Gordon,
Courtney Jones and
Jodi Galucci.
Shameka follows up her 2008 First Team All-GSC selection with a second team
nod. She has claimed two GSC defender of the Week awards this season and has
tallied three goals and two assists.
Jones earns her third career All-GSC honor and second selection for the
Second Team. This season she has compiled a 17-0 record at keeper while
allowing just four goals with a .31 goals against average.
Galucci earns her first career selection to an All-GSC team. This season
she has appeared in all 17 games while making 15 starts. She is currently
seventh on the team in points (14) and has totaled four goals and six
assists on the season thus far.
Friday marks the beginning of the GSC Soccer Tournament held at Brosnaham
Park here in Pensacola. The Argos look to defend last season’s championship
as they take on No. 4 seed Christian Brothers in the semifinals at 1:30pm CT
Friday afternoon.
