Lady Argos Battle Out 4-1 Victory Over Mocs
Box Score
LAKELAND,
Fla. — Battling through injuries and tough physical play the No. 2
University of West Florida women’s soccer team pulled out a hard fought 4-1
victory over Florida Southern College on Sunday afternoon. Taking a 1-0 lead
into the second half, the Lady Argos kept on the attack and forced three
late goals to pull ahead for the victory, improving to 5-0-0 on the season.
The first half proved to be a tough defensive battle for the Argos
despite maintaining possession for much of the half. The only offensive
punch in the half came from the foot of
Marcela Franco
(Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Visconde de Porto Seguro) when she fired one in
on one touch off a corner kick by
Jordan Stone (Fort
Walton Beach, Fla./Fort Walton Beach HS).
After halftime the Mocs came out fired up, making a couple of runs on
goal in first couple minutes of the half. Kerri-Ann Brown would eventually
find the back of the net in the 45th minute when she slipped on in through
traffic to tie it up a one apiece. With time winding down the Argos would
net three goals in the final 20 minutes to pull away and take the match 4-1.
Leading goal scorer
Shaneka Gordon (Old Harbour, Jamaica/Community College of Baltimore)
found the back of the net in 70th minute to put the Argos on top 2-1, her
fourth game-winner of the season.
Shakira Duncan
(Kingston, Jamaica/Darton College) netted her six goal of the season in the
70th minute before
Dernelle Mascall (Basse terre, Moruga, Trinidad/Mobile) would cap off
the scoring with a goal on a penalty kick with under two minutes remaining.
The Argos next match will come this Wednesday, September 16th when they
square off with NAIA foe Mobile in a non-conference mid-week match at the
UWF Soccer Complex at 7:30pm CT.
