TAMPA - Sophomore
Chelsea Klotz delivered a golden goal in the 106th minute of play off of a
feed from fellow sophomore Noelle Pineiro to give the University of South
Florida soccer team a 3-2 victory over in-state foe Stetson Sunday evening
in Deland at the Stetson Soccer Complex in the Bulls final non-conference
match of the 2009 season.
"I'm really proud of the team," said Bulls head coach Denise Schilte-Brown.
"We really dominated for the most part although we had a lapse and let them
back into the match but I was impressed by the way we responded."
Klotz would take the feed from Piniero to tally a game winner for the third
time in her career. Klotz, who has three goals on season, has scored in
three of the Bulls last four matches. The assist was the first of season for
Pineiro.
The match would see-saw back and four with lead changes three different
times. USF would strike first.
Sophomore Chantelle Goodson would take a feed from freshman defender Bahar
Sansae and send a blast from 25 yards out that ricohetted off the crossbar
and to the back of the net. The goal and assist were both the first in
Goodson and Sansar's collegiate career.
USF would take a 1-0 lead into the half with the Bulls outshooting Hatters
by an 11-3 margin.
However Stetson would answer with two goals from Heather Berg with the first
coming at 49:39 and the second coming at 54:37.
Down 2-1 with less than 20 minutes remaining, USF would turn to their
leading scorer, as Pineiro evened up the score at two with a goal at 72:12
with an assist from true freshman Taylor Patterson. The goal is the fifth of
season from Pineiro and the helper was Patterson's team leading fourth.
Pineiro's five goals on the season is the most by a Bull since Lindsay
Brauer scored nine in 2006.
With the number of sides at two apiece, USF doubled up the Hatters with
eight corner kicks to the Hatters four.
"It was unfortunate that we had to go into overtime but again I was happy
with the way the team responded and winning a match in overtime will give us
more experience," added Schilte-Brown.
With the score all tied up, the Bulls continued their onslaught on the
Stetson keeper out shooting the Hatters again in the second half by a 13-5
difference with Klotz leading the way with 10 shots, five of which were on
goal with a number of them coming late in regulation.
With so many good scoring chances it seemed as if it was just a matter of
time before the Bulls' would push one to the back of the net and Klotz would
finally answer and in doing so snapped USF's two-match skid.
With the win the Bulls move to 3-4-1 on the season. USF finished the 2009
non-conference slate with a 3-3-1 slate.
USF, 0-1-0 in the BIG EAST, will now finish off their current four match
road trip with a trip north to the Steel City on Thursday, Sept. 24 to take
on the University of Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. Following Thursday's match, USF
will return home to USF Soccer Stadium for their final homestand of 2009 for
five crucial BIG EAST matches, with the first coming against nationally
ranked West Virginia on Sunday, October 2 at 1 p.m. The match will be
broadcast live on the Bright House Sports Network.
