Haines City Avenges Regular Season Losses
from theledger.com
DAVENPORT | Haines City girls soccer coach Alicia Manautou admitted she
felt like she was having at least a few heart attacks on the sidelines
during the Hornets' Class 4A-District 9 quarterfinal match with Ridge
Community.
Much like her Hornets though, Manautou lived to fight another day.
The sixth-seeded Hornets got two goals from Cynthia Baraja and
heart-stopping play from goalkeeper Sara Castro as they avenged two blowout
regular-season losses to the Bolts with a 4-2 victory Tuesday night at
Ridge.
Haines City will next play Kathleen, which rolled past Tenoroc, 8-0, in
an earlier quarterfinal.
Most of Manautou's anxiety emanated from the play of Castro, who
frequently challenged and beat Ridge players to loose balls most of the
night.
Castro made 15 saves including two that ended up saving the match in the
second half. Castro, at the last second, turned away Maite Calixte's hard
shot that was bound for the top left corner of the goal midway through the
second half that would've tied the game. Castro also turned in point-blank
stop on Jenna Carey. The goaltender misplayed a ball that bounced over her
head and off the top of the post and turned around just in time to see Carey
try to deflect the ball into the goal, but Castro stopped it and preserved
the Hornets' lead.
