TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Fourth-ranked Florida State (6-1-0) avenged
Thursday night's loss to UCF by slaying No. 24 UAB (6-1-0) 8-0 Sunday
evening at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The Seminoles tied a season-high
with eight goals while
Katie Bolinsky,
Rachel Lim and
Tiffany McCarty scored two goals a piece in the win.
FSU handed UAB its first loss of the season as the Blazers were off to
their best start in school history. Entering Sunday's contest, UAB had given
up just three goals in six games but allowed eight to the Seminoles
including five in the first half.
Lim and McCarty tied a career-high for goals in a game while Bolinsky
recorded her first two goals of her collegiate career.
Toni Pressley picked up two assists for the second time on the year and
Lauren Switzer tied a career-high with four points on a goal and two
assists. The multi-assist game for Switzer was her second of the season and
fifth of her career.
"I thought it was a very good performance tonight," said head coach
Mark Krikorian. "Our attacking was very good, we were a little more
patient, a little more deliberant in the attack. In recent games, we were a
little too quick to go forward. Tonight, we slowed the game down a little
bit and attacked in different manners."
After being held scoreless against UCF, Florida State wasted little time
getting on the scoreboard against the Blazers as Lim found the back of the
net just a minute and 18 seconds into the game. Freshman
Tiana Brockway sent a beautiful ball into the box that Lim came charging
in on and headed into the back of the net for the goal. The assist was
Brockway's first of her collegiate career.
"Getting that first goal was very important," said Lim. "It provided us
with the momentum and relaxed us a bit."
In the 10th minute, McCarty increased the Florida State lead to 2-0 as
she bent a shot from just outside the 6-yard box on the left side for her
sixth goal of the season. Switzer picked up the assist as she out jumped the
competition on a goal kick flicking the ball down the field. McCarty
collected the ball and dribbled toward the end line before changing
directions back up field and smashing a shot into the back of the net for
the goal.
The Seminoles broke the game open with three goals in a span of eight
minutes and seven seconds. Lim began the scoring spree blasting a shot from
19 yards out inside the crossbar for her second goal of the evening and
second two-goal performance of the season.
Jessica Price and Switzer were credited with an assist on the play.
Just over four minutes later, McCarty tallied her second goal of the game
to give FSU a 4-0 lead. McCarty took a pass from Pressley and made a long
run down the middle of the field before finding the upper right corner from
14 yards out.
Bolinsky rounded out the scoring in the first half with her first
collegiate goal in the 33rd minute. In similar fashion to McCarty's second
goal, the redshirt freshman from Coral Springs, Fla., made a long run down
the middle of the pitch and beat UAB keeper Kate Blankenship with a shot
inside the right post from 16 yards out for the goal.
Breezy Hupp assisted on the play.
The Seminoles continued to pour on the offensive pressure at the start of
the second half as Switzer recorded her first goal of the season in the 51st
minute. On a long pass into the box from Pressley, Price jumped up for a
would be header but could not reach the ball. Blankenship lost sight of the
ball on Price's jump and Switzer was there to one-time the shot from four
yards out for the score.
Price gave the Seminoles a 7-0 lead in the 63rd minute as she beat a
couple Blazer defenders with a long run down the right side before sending a
cross passed a diving Blankenship and inside the left post for the score.
Ines Jaurena played Price the ball to set up the goal.
The scoring concluded in the 84th minute on Bolinsky's second goal of the
evening. Off a pass from
Tori Huster, Bolinsky made a nice move towards the middle of the pitch
to beat a defender setting up a one-on-one versus the keeper. Bolinsky
finished the play sending a low liner inside the left post passed UAB keeper
Alexis Braziel for the goal.
"I was pretty excited," added Bolinsky. "It was great to come out and
score a couple goals tonight. I had a lot of good balls played by my
teammates to get me in behind their backline, the rest was up to me to
finish."
The Seminole backline dominated in the win allowing the Blazers just one
shot all evening long. UAB was held without a shot until the 78th minute
when Carolyn Polcari sent a shot on goal.
Kimmy Diaz, who entered the game in the 64th minute, was there for the
save.
"I thought it was very good," Krikorian said of his defenders efforts.
"We are going to continue to experiment and try to get it right by the NCAA
Tournament if we are fortunate enough to get there. These steps along the
way are opportunities for us to evaluate and look at different players in
different situations."
Erin McNulty picked up the win in goal as she finished the game with
over 62 minutes of action.
Casey Short saw action for the first time in 2009 after suffering a foot
injury during the pre-season. Short started the second half and played 15
minutes.
FSU finished Sunday's contest with a season-high 31 shots. The Seminoles
also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
