Feb. 11, 2009
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference and
Commissioner John D. Swofford announced Wednesday, February 11,
the honorees for this year's All-ACC Women's Soccer Academic Team.
Florida State placed four student-athletes on this year's squad as
Becky Edwards,
Marissa Kazbour,
Katrin Schmidt and
Sanna Talonen were all recognized in 2008. All four Seminole
student-athletes are repeat honorees from last year.
Schmidt is one of four student-athletes on this year's squad to
hold the distinction of being named to the All-ACC Academic team
in each of the first four seasons of the award's existence.
Joining Schmidt as four-year honoree are Christie McDonald of
Duke, Yael Averbuch of North Carolina and Tami Krzeszewski of NC
State. Edwards is making an appearance on the team for the third
time in her college career.
All 11 league schools that compete in women's soccer are
represented on the ACC All-Academic Team, which includes six
student-athletes that were named first-, second- or third-team
All-America, four All-ACC first-team selections, seven players who
were named to the All-ACC second team and three that were named to
the ACC All-Freshmen team. The honorees also include a number of
players who received national or regional academic honors.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have
earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and
maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
The North Carolina Tar Heels led all schools with seven
academic selections including Averbuch who was the recipient of
the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Duke was second with
six followed by Miami and Virginia Tech with five honorees apiece.
Florida State joined Boston College with four recipients on the
team, while Clemson and Wake Forest each earned three. Both
Maryland and NC State collected a pair and Virginia rounded out
the 42-member squad with one nod.
In 2008, Edwards became the third Seminole in the last two
years to be named a first team Scholar All-American by the NSCAA,
while Schmidt and
Kirsten van de Ven earned the distinction in 2007. Schmidt,
who graduated with a degree in International Affairs at FSU
following the fall 2008 semester, was named to the NSCAA Scholar
All-South Region third team.
All four Seminole student-athletes were named to the CoSIDA/ESPN
the Magazine Academic District III team this past year. Edwards
and Talonen earned second-team recognition, while Kazbour and
Schmidt received third team honors.
