MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Florida State women's soccer team
closed out the spring season with a perfect 4-0 record defeating
intra-state rival Florida 4-0 on Saturday. The match, held at the
Viera Regional Park in Brevard County, was one of five that took
place as part of the Second Annual Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day.
The weather was perfect and the fan turnout was high, as the
Seminoles and Gators took to the field. Both teams were physical
through the entire match, but the Seminole defensive was
unrelenting and the offense capitalized on the Gators' defensive
holes.
The Seminole defense allowed few shot opportunities for the
Gators as goalkeepers
Erin McNulty and
Kimmy Diaz earned nine combined saves during the match.
Meanwhile, the offense made the most of any opportunities the
Gator defense presented, recording 18 shot attempts and notching
five goals. The scoring began on a goal by
Jessica Price with nine minutes remaining in the first period.
Three minutes later,
Amanda DaCosta found
Tiffany McCarty for a goal.
In the second period both teams increased their aggressiveness.
Jessica Price was fouled in the goal box midway through the
second period and
Becky Edwards scored on the Seminoles' first penalty kick of
the season. Two minutes later the Seminoles found themselves
within striking distance again, but the Gators deflected a shot
attempt.
Breezy Hupp caught the deflection about 25 yards from the goal
box and launched the ball into the right corner of the net for the
Seminoles' fourth and final goal of the game.
The Seminoles end the season with 17 goals off 56 shots and
eight assists overall. Goalkeepers Diaz and McNulty combined to
earn 26 saves and allowed only three goals. McCarty led the team
with four goals, while
Amanda DaCosta was the team leader in assists with three
