FIU Ties Program Record for Conference Season Wins
FIU vs Troy Box Score
TROY,
Ala. - Senior captain
Amy Jackson had taken 23 shots since the last time she scored a goal on
Oct. 26, 2008, and all failed to find the back of the net - until Sunday.
Jackson scored the
game-winning goal in overtime to give the Golden Panthers a 2-1 victory at
Troy. With the win, FIU (8-5-3, 6-1-1) ties the program record for most wins
during Sun Belt play, as both the 2000 and 2001 squads recorded six
victories.
"That's a great
accomplishment," coach
Thomas Chestnutt said. "We knew Troy was going to be a tough game. They
are a very organized team and very well coached. So congrats to the girls
for sticking to it and not hanging their heads after Troy scored late in
regulation."
FIU recorded 12 shots on
goal - their best output of the conference season - and Troy goalkeeper
Ashley Branham saved five in the first half and 10 for the game.
Cortney Bergin and
Casey Thames' each had looks at the net in first nine minutes before
Bergin served the ball into the box and the Trojans recorded an own goal to
give FIU a 1-0 lead at 12:27.
With less than nine
minutes remaining in the game,
April Perry's shot hit the post and
Katrina Rose followed immediately with a shot that sailed high. Rose
fired at the net again with six minutes remaining but it was saved.
With 1:05 to go, Troy's
Bridget Duke scored on a penalty kick to knot the game at 1 and send it to
overtime.
"In the second half,
Troy had a lot of energy and the referee called a penalty kick. That's kind
of tough to deal with, scoring so late in the game," Chestnutt said. "But
from the beginning of overtime, we took over, and I'm proud of the team for
their resolve."
FIU fired first, but
Thaisa Moreno's shot went high and
Kassandra Sorzano's sailed wide right. Freshman
Kaitlyn Savage saved Troy's only shot in the extra period before Jackson
connected on the third goal of her career, helping extend the team's
unbeaten streak to seven games.
Jackson received the
ball from Moreno on the left side and never hesitated.
"You know that feeling
you get when you know something is going to happen? When Thaisa served the
ball, I just knew it where it was going to go, and I got to it," Jackson
said. "It's a great feeling to score, but most of all I was happy to clinch
it for the team."
The Golden Panthers
return home Friday to face UALR at 7 p.m. on Parent's Weekend.
