FGCU Garners Multiple Postseason Awards
FORT
MYERS, Fla. –
Four FGCU student-athletes received conference honors led by Katherine
Correllus and Amber McCall, both earning First-Team All-Atlantic Sun honors.
Joining the First-Team All-Conference performers is Danielle Faller who was
named Freshman of the Year and goalkeeper Stephanie Powers
who earned
A-Sun Second-Team honors.
The
A-Sun All-Conference teams are voted on by the conference head coaches and
sports information directors.
For the third consecutive season, Amber McCall earned A-Sun
First-Team honors. McCall led the Eagles in five offensive categories, and
finished tied for the A-Sun lead in goals.
“Amber’s recognition is well deserved,” said head coach Jim
Blankenship. “She has been the heart and soul of this team for three years.”
Katherine Correllus also earned First-Team honors. The
sophomore was
the backbone for FGCU’s defense. She started every game this season, and
aided in the Eagles league leading nine shutouts.
“KC really showed us that she is one of the top defenders in
the A-Sun,” said Blankenship. “I am really pleased that her hard work paid
off.”
Faller joins fellow Eagle Lindsay Haw as the only FGCU
players to win Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year honors - Haw won in 2007.
The rookie midfielder started in all 19 games for FGCU and racked up four
points on the year including the Eagles game-winning goal against Army. The
Elizabethtown, Pa. native helped the Eagles to a third-place finish in the
A-Sun regular season and a near perfect 6-1-2 home record. In addition to
her Freshman of the Year honor, Faller also picked up All-Freshman honors.
“Danielle was an important part of our success this season,”
said Blankenship. “She played very well all season and is very deserving of
these honors.”
Goalkeeper Stephanie Powers garnered Second-Team All-Atlantic
Sun laurels after posting the league’s second-best save percentage and
goals-against average. Powers also tied for second in the A-Sun in shutouts
with seven.
“Stephanie came up big for us all season,” stated
Blankenship. “Her seven shutouts aided this team to one of their most
successful seasons.
“
"We had a lot of players play really well this season," said
Blankenship. "The entire team came together to pull out some very tightly
contested matches. I appreciate the efforts of our players and our assistant
coaches."
