Becky Edwards selected as the 12th overall pick in the 2010 WPS Draft.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -
Florida State midfielder Becky Edwards was drafted by the FC Gold Pride of
the Women’s Professional Soccer League on Friday, January 15. Edwards was
selected in the second round with the 12th overall pick and becomes the
first Seminole soccer player in school history to be drafted by the WPS.
Edwards had a breakout year in her final season at Florida State starting
all 25 games for the Seminoles in 2009. The senior midfielder/defender
finished third on the team in points (18) recording career-highs in points,
goals (5) and shots (46). She tied a career-high with eight assists, a mark
she established as a freshman back in 2006.
The senior captain finished her Seminole career tied for third all-time in
appearances with 95, while sitting fifth in career starts with 89. Edwards
tallied 20 assists over her four year career, tied for sixth all-time at FSU,
including eight game-winners.
This past season, Edwards made school history as a first team All-America
honoree by the NSCAA becoming the Seminoles' first two-time, first team
All-American. The Downingtown, Pa., also earned first team All-ACC accolades
and became the school's first CoSIDA Academic All-American earning third
team honors in 2009.
Edwards now joins former Seminoles Erika Sutton (Boston Breakers), Mami
Yamaguchi (Atlanta Beat), and Sarah Wagenfuhr (St. Louis Athletica) in the
WPS.
Edwards is currently participating in a week long training camp with the
United States Women’s U-23 National Team in Carson, Calif. The U-23 squad
will face Korea Republic's Full Women's National Team twice while training
in Southern California on Saturday, January 16 and then again on Monday,
January 18. Both matches are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot
Center.
The Women’s Professional Soccer League kicks off its second season in April
2010, representing the highest level of women’s professional soccer in North
America. Formed in September 2007 as the result of the efforts of the
Women’s Soccer Initiative, Inc., WPS consists of nine teams across the
country located in Atlanta, the Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New
Jersey/New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Washington D.C.
