Eagles Knock off Lipscomb, 2-1

The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s soccer team won their ninth match
of the season on the road against Lipscomb on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles
defeated the Bison, 2-1, after Gina Petracco’s game winner propelled FGCU to
their fourth A-Sun victory.
“It was very refreshing to see us bounce back the way we did today,” said
head coach Jim Blankenship.” The intensity was there for all 90 minutes.”
The Eagles offense came out strong in the first half, dominating the shot
category 15-1.
The Eagles struck first at the 40:34 mark as Amber McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.)
added her team leading sixth goal of the season.
FGCU fired 14 shots before the Bison recorded their first shot of the match
in the 42nd minute.
In the 68th minute, Gina Petracco (Fort Myers, Fla.) added her
first goal of the 2009 campaign to put the Eagles up 2-0.
With less than nine minutes remaining in the match, Lipscomb’s Kate Spellman
found the back of the net to pull the Bison’s within one.
The FGCU defense stepped up the pressure in the final minutes to secure the
win and move FGCU to 9-5-3 (4-2-2 A-Sun), as Lipscomb fell to 1-7-0 (3-13-0
A-Sun) on the season.
In the match, 12 Eagles recorded a shot with Lindsay Haw (Palm City, Fla.)
collecting two assist and Jennifer Crittenberger (Lighthouse Point, Fla.)
adding her second assist of the season. FGCU held a 24-6 advantage in the
shot category, and earned three corners to the Bison’s one.
On the season, FGCU has outshot their opponents by a 242-154 margin, and
Sunday’s match marked the third time this season that the Eagles have put up
20 shots or more.
FGCU returns
home to face ETSU on Friday Oct. 23 at 7:00 p.m. before concluding the 2009
season against USC Upstate on Sunday Oct. 25 at 1:00 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer
Complex.
