Box Score
FORT
MYERS, Fla. –The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s soccer team
completed the Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic with a 3-0 win against Army on
Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex. Three different Eagles
collected their first goal of the season as FGCU won the Embassy Suites
Kick-Off Classic with a 2-0 record.
The Eagles improve to 2-2-1 as the Black Knights fall to 2-2-1 on the
season. The win marks the second consecutive win for the Eagles, and their
three goals is currently a 2009 best.
“It was an all around good game,” said Head Coach Jim Blankenship.”We
played defense, created opportunities and scored some goals. I was really
pleased with the way we handled ourselves all game. The effort was there for
all 90 minutes, and against a team like Army that is something we really
stressed. All-in-all this weekend was a success.”
The Eagles controlled the tempo for most of the contest as they had
numerous opportunities to score, while out shooting Army by a 12-4 margin.
Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla.) got the win in goal for the Eagles,
stopping the two shots she faced.
The first goal of the match came in the 33rd minute. Kathleen Hunter
(Safety Harbor, Fla.) took a free-kick for the Eagles near the far corner
after Army was called for a handball. Hunter’s ball found Danielle Faller
(Elizabethtown, Penn.) in the middle of the box, and Faller’s header found
its way past Army goalkeeper Alex Lostetter to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles entered the half with a 4-2 advantage in shots, and a 3-0
advantage in corner kicks.
Just minutes into the 2nd half, Amber McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.) added
another Eagle goal. After a scramble 10-yards out, the ball was deflected
toward A. McCall who had a open look and buried the shot to put the Eagles
up by two.
The Eagles added one more goal in the final minute of the Embassy Suites
Kick-Off Classic. Freshman Jessica Swartzentruber (Sarasota, Fla.) received
a great from Brianna McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.) in the middle of the box.
Swatzentrubers header squirted past Lostetter to give the Eagles 3-0
advantage.
In the match, the Eagles held the Black Knights to only four shots, and
didn’t allow a corner. The Eagles finished with 12 shots and four corners.
The Eagles will be back in action on Friday night as they play host Palm
Beach Atlantic at the FGCU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00
