Denise Schilte-Brown Answers Our Questions

1. When searching for a recruit what are looking for when you watch them play?

It depends upon our positional needs for that year, but ideally we are looking for complete players; technically, tactically and psychologically sound and physically gifted. We play a possession style game, but we look for outside backs and wide players that can get up and down the flank and ultimately stretch defenses.

2. What is your advice to your recruits about playing and training their senior year of high school? Should they continue to play in tournaments and state cup or is this an opportunity for them to relax before starting college?

Players that are seniors in high school are so under prepared for the rigors of the college game and training. I don't think they can afford to relax and not be training hard every day. It is a great time for them to get a high level individual trainer and work on their own deficiencies that can't be addressed in a team dynamic. If they haven't started a weight program, then this is the time; under proper supervision of course. While some are relaxing, others are training and they will be better prepared for the next level.

3. After graduating only 2 seniors, you have 18 new recruits coming in this year. Why so many?

I think whenever there is a coaching change, there is some turnover. We want to take this team to a higher level and compete for a national championship. In doing that, there will always be some players that decide that they do not want to train at that level and decide to transfer. We also had some unfortunate news from the NCAA that declared five of our Norwegian players professional, four days before our preseason started. That ruling was eventually overturned, but with the long process and uncertainty, they decided to go back to Norway. We never like to carry a training roster of more than 26 players and I think we accomplished that this year. Obviously as we move forward our recruiting classes will be smaller and much more in tune with our specific needs for that year. It just so happened that we had a lot of needs this year, specifically with depth.

4. What are your expectations for this year’s recruiting class?

We expect this class to raise the level of USF Women's Soccer and more importantly set a very solid foundation for our program to build from as we strive to obtain our realistic goal of competing for a berth in the NCAA tournament every year.

5. Why did you take the Head Coaching position at USF?

I felt that USF was a place that my staff and I could cultivate an environment that would attract the nation's top soccer student-athletes. The campus is beautiful, the university has an excellent reputation academically, the weather speaks for itself and it is close to my parents and family is a very important part of my ideology.
