Cuts cost Kerby soccer coaching position

gulf breeze news

Oriole Beach Elementary will lose only three or four positions this summer, but one of them is being felt in Gulf Breeze Proper.

Sharon Kerby, who led the Lady Dolphin soccer team to the state tournament in each of her two seasons, was forced to step down last week after it was learned her OBES position wasn't going to be retained.

"As many of you know, I am just finishing teaching my third year in Santa Rosa County School District. Due to budget cuts, all third PE positions in the elementary schools are being cut (mine included)," Kerby said in an email to players and parents last week.

"As of June 8, I will no longer be employed by Santa Rosa County. There is a possibility that I may teach next year in the classroom, but for now that is still unknown."

"I have submitted my letter of resignation as the girl's soccer coach in order to give the administration a chance to fill my position."

"I would welcome the opportunity to continue teaching at Oriole Beach Elementary School. However; I am also working towards and have recently received my teaching certification in New Jersey."

"I am not sure what is in store for me in this next year, but I would like to thank you all for the privilege to be a part of your lives and your soccer careers. I wish you all the best in life and soccer. I know you will find great success. Enjoy your summer!"

The Lady Dolphins lost to Merritt Island and Ponte Vedra in the 2008 and 2009 state semifinals, respectively.
