Clay Falls to Stanton from
jacksonville.com
If Stanton freshman Danielle Doucet didn't have a favorite spot on the
soccer field before Thursday night's Region 1-4A quarterfinal, she probably
does now.
Doucet scored two first-half goals from almost the same spot, about 15
yards out off the left post, in Stanton's 4-0 girls soccer victory over
visiting Clay (15-4-1).
"We've been doing a good job all year ... getting the ball on the
outsides, but one of the things we have been lacking during the year is that
back-post run," Stanton coach Matt Hemphill said. "Danielle was definitely
fulfilling that really well tonight."
Doucet netted her first score in the seventh minute on a play into the
box from senior Whitney Rohrer, who had brought the ball down the right wing
and saved it from rolling out of bounds after a Clay defender attempted to
deflect it away.
Doucet scored again from nearly the same position with 7:37 to play on a
cross from Rebecca Mott.
Jenna Walton padded Stanton's lead in the 47th minute when she scored on
an Emily Griffenkranz free kick from the right post that had ricocheted in
front of the goal.
Stanton's final goal came at the 31:03 mark in the second half when
Shelby Hughey lofted a shot toward the goal that deflected into the net off
a Stanton defender, who had attempted to clear the ball.
Stanton (11-9-4) advances to next Tuesday's regional semifinals to face
district rival Bishop Kenny, a 2-0 winner over host Alachua Santa Fe on
Thursday.
Katie Goodwin and Mandy Terbrueggen scored for the Crusaders (7-6-3) in
their Region 1-4A shutout. Nicole Doherty crossed a ball to Goodwin in the
first half that she one-touched into the goal. Terbrueggen slotted her goal
past Santa Fe's keeper off an assist from Melissa Corso.
