Canes girls find the edge
In
the early match between the Eagles and Hurricanes girls teams, PHU won 2-0
behind a pair of goals from senior Catherine Brinkman.
Brinkman put the Hurricanes (2-0) ahead 1-0 10 minutes in after sending a
laser into the top right corner of goal from 25 yards out.
Brinkman iced the game with two minutes remaining after finding herself
unmarked in front of the net and calmly slotting Kelly Phipps' pass past
East Lake goalkeeper Alicia Aldridge.
Though they were outplayed for a majority of the first half and parts of
the second, the Eagles (2-2) had a handful of opportunities to come out with
a draw. East Lake scored late in the first half but the goal was disallowed
because the ball crossed the end line prior to going in.
In the second half, the Eagles' Madison Del Duca found herself alone with
the ball and only the goalkeeper in front of her, but Del Duca's shot was
slowed down by the fingertips of PHU goalie Nikki Brewer and a Hurricanes
defender was able to clear the ball before reaching the goal.
"We went to a 3-4-3 in the second half and had some opportunities," East
Lake coach John Orr said. "We just didn't finish."
The Hurricanes' back line kept East Lake in check all night. Any time an
East Lake attacker had a sliver of daylight in front of goal, a PHU defender
