SHORES, Fla.--The Saint Leo Lions, the defending conference tournament
champions, were chosen the favorites to win the 2009 Sunshine State
Conference Women’s Soccer Championship. The Barry University Buccaneers
placed sixth in the preseason poll conducted among the league’s women’s
soccer coaches and sports information directors.
Rollins, the 2008 regular season champ, was selected to finish second with
115 points, just five points shy of the first spot. The Tars picked up the
remaining eight first place votes. Florida Southern finished third with
98 points. The Tampa Spartans, who won the title in 2006 and 2007,
finished fourth with 90 points, while Florida Tech finished fifth with 66
points.
The Bucs received a total of 56 points to place ahead of Lynn (7th),
Nova Southeastern (8th) and Eckerd (9th). The Bucs,
who return 13 letter winners from last season, finished 2008 with a 9-8-1
record, 1-6-1 in the SSC.
Barry’s rookie of the year Allie Llaneras will be a big impact player for
the team this season. The sophomore started in 14 games for the Bucs last
season and took 23 shots. She finished with one goal, the game-winner
against Newberry, and one assist.
Other key players for the Bucs are Juniors Michelle Tarasiuk who third on
the team with 10 points and goalie Sami Cromartie. Cromartie finished with
74 saves last season and a 1.00 goals against average. Sophomores Sarah
Wolfer and Haley Struthers both finished with 6 goals each last season.
