Berkeley Prep cruises TAMPA — A five-goal first
half proved enough for Berkeley Prep to advance past Sarasota Cardinal
Mooney in the Class 3A region quarterfinals. The Bucs won 7-1.
It took 20 minutes for Samantha Newhaller to knock in the Buccaneers'
first two goals. The Cougars' Shareen Baghi cut the lead in half, but
Berkeley (18-3-2) didn't relent.
After playing the next 10 minutes in Cougars (9-9-1) territory and
landing a missed shot off the crossbar, sophomore star Taylor Richardson
extended the lead back to two. Richardson's first of two goals increased her
team-high count to 27 for the season.
With five minutes to play in the first half, Baghi took a hit to the head
and returned to the bench. She watched as her team gave up two more goals,
both assisted by Allie Inglehart.
Though Baghi started the second half, the story stayed the same. The
Buccaneers continued to pound shots but goalie Sara Davis kept the net clean
for the first 20 minutes until Richardson managed to head one by her on a
corner kick.
The Cougars assaulted one more time but the Bucs' goaltending proved too
strong.
Whitney Hang followed nine minutes later with her second to push the
score to 7-1.
"We always have different players stepping up every game," coach Ken
Roberts said. "(The semifinals) is just the next step."
