Drops Opener To Saints
TAMPA,
Fla.—The Barry women’s soccer team opened the 2009 season with a narrow 3-2
loss to the North Georgia Saints at Tampa’s Pepin Stadium on Sunday.
The Saints (1-0-1) struck twice in the space of 1:23 in the second half to
build a 3-1 lead and weathered a late goal from the Bucs (0-1-0) for the
win.
Kelsey Martin put North Georgia up 1-0 in the 23rd minute with an assist
from Kelly Penston. But the Bucs responded just three minutes later as
Lainie Ferring lifted a corner kick to Steph Day who slotted the ball home
to even the contest.
In the second half, Casey Smith and Danielle Brannon struck with unassisted
goals, just 1:23 apart.
Allie Llaneras trimmed the lead to one with a goal in the 69th minute off a
pass from Haley Struthers, but the Bucs could not find the equalizer over
the last 20 minutes.
Freshman Emily Brunschweiler had four saves for the Bucs in her first
collegiate start, while Jessica English made one save for Saints.
The Bucs return home to host Florida Memorial on Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 7:00
