3 Goal First Half Puts Jenkins into State
Title Game
Tampa-In front of a rambunctious crowd of
Jenkins fans the Eagles score 3 in the first half to soar past Fleming
Island in the Florida Girls class 5A High School Soccer State Semi-Final
game.
From the outset Jenkins speed and physical
style of play seemed to be too much for Fleming Island.
We figured if we could press the ball and play with a
faster speed of play we could be successful," head coach Joe Lenard said.
Fleming Island coach Darrell Ivey said the Eagles were the fastest team
he had faced this season and that the speed was a factor, but Jenkins got
its goals off three set plays.
Senior midfielder Ashley Yamnitz was the first to score at 30:25 in the
first half when Brittany Trawick headed an Emily Rice throw-in past Fleming
Island's Junior keeper Brittny Armstrong.
The second goal would come from the foot of Freshman defender Kacy
Scarpa. Scarpa struck a beautiful free keep from about 40 yards over the out
stretched arm of Armstrong with 13:11 left in the half.
Third and final goal of the game would also come off a free kick from
Scapa with 3:17 remaining in the first half. This time Senior Kayla Bala
would be on the other end to give Jenkins a 3 to 0 victory over Fleming
Island. "It just hit my stomach," Bala said. "It kind of hurt."
Jenkins will now play Palm Harbor U in the class 5A state championship
game on Saturday.
