Archbishop McCarthy High School girls' soccer coach Paul Frechette has reason to be proud. Bridget Becker of Weston and Chrissy Gratz of Sunrise are the first players from the McCarthy girls' soccer team recruited to play Division I college soccer.

Becker will play for Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., and Gratz for East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.

''It is great to see hard work, determination and dedication pay off like this with the dream of playing Division 1 college soccer coming true,'' Frechette said.

Four-year starters, Becker and Gratz have been an integral part of McCarthy's soccer success.

Gratz began playing YMCA soccer when she was 4 and later AYSO soccer, where she was scouted for travel soccer. She competed for eight years for the Weston Fury (U9-U16) travel program. Her team won the President's Cup at U11 and the State Cup at U13.

In 2007, Gratz joined Team Boca U17 and is now playing U18 for it. Also a member of the Region III Olympic Development Program, she is in the national pool. She plans to study communication in college.

''East Carolina is a great school, in a super location and has fantastic coaching,'' said Gratz, who also will compete in track. She plans to do the field events (pole vault, triple jump, high jump, long jump).

Becker also started playing soccer when she was 4 in the YMCA coed league with her brother. She also competed in AYSO and joined the Weston Fury travel team when she was 11 -- a teammate of Gratz on the President's Cup and State Cup winning teams. During her U16 season, she joined Team Boca. She was selected captain of Team Boca U17 and U18 teams.

Last year, Becker and Gratz helped Team Boca win the prestigious Disney Showcase by beating some of the top-ranked teams in the nation.

Becker will play soccer for Lafayette, a Division 1 college in the Patriot League (Army, Navy, Bucknell, etc.). The school is very strong academically.

Becker and Gratz are Miami Herald All-Broward selections.
