RSL Girls Into Super Y-League Finals

TAMPA - Qualification for United Soccer Leagues’ Super Y-League North American Finals ordinarily isn’t a walk in the park. Someone forgot to tell that to RSL Florida’s girl’s under-17 team, which coasted through its qualification schedule that ended on Saturday, August 9.

In 10 games, RSL scored 65 goals, and gave up only six. They did not lose a game and only drew twice, in its final two games after qualification was already assured. In short, there was a lot for Coach Jim Cote to be pleased about. more

 

Bulls Open Against UNF

Tampa - The University of South Florida women’s soccer team will make the University of Tampa’s Pepin Stadium their home away from home for 90 minutes to open their season this Friday Aug. 22 as the Bulls host the University of North Florida at 5 p.m. The game will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

 Under the guidance of second year head coach Denise Schilte-Brown, the Bulls kicked off the preseason with a 1-0 win in exhibition play against the University of Central Florida. The Bulls lone goal came in the opening minutes as freshman Chelsea Klotz pushed a shot past the UCF keeper.

Junior goalkeeper Mallori Lofton-Malachi led a strong defensive effort by stopping five shots against a Knights team that qualified for the NCAA tournament a season ago. more

 

Owls Open 2008 Season This Weekend

BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team begins its 2008 season this weekend. The Owls travel to Fort Myers Friday, August 22 to play a road match at Florida Gulf Coast University before facing the 20th-ranked University of Florida Gators at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 24 at FAU Field.

The Sun Belt Conference coaches picked Florida Atlantic to finish fifth among the league's 12-teams in the SBC preseason poll. The Owls return the majority of a strong defensive side from 2007, but must find a way to replace the bulk of its offensive production. FAU loses five key players who accounted for 24 of FAU's 28 goals in 2007 - helping the Owls post its eighth-straight winning season under 10th-year head coach Brian Dooleymore

 

Becky Edwards, Amanda DaCosta Named To MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List

Aug. 19, 2008

Mission, Kan. - Florida State defender Becky Edwards and midfielder Amanda DaCosta were named to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on Tuesday, August 19. The Seminole duo is among 47 student-athletes on this year's watch list including eight from the ACC to lead all conferences. The MAC Hermann Trophy is presented to the nation's top collegiate player on both the women's and men's side.

"This is a great honor for two outstanding student-athletes," explained head coach Mark Krikorian. "It's a sign of respect from folks out there that Florida State has quality players and that these student-athletes are playing at an elite level."  more

 

Coach Schilte-Brown on 1010 Sports

TAMPA – University of South Florida women’s soccer coach Denise Schilte-Brown and men’s soccer coach George Kiefer will both be guests on this week’s edition of the USF Magazine Show on 1010 Sports AM on Wednesday Aug. 20. The show airs weekly, starting at 6 p.m. and runs for an hour.

With eight returners and 24 newcomers, Schilte-Brown will hope to make back-to-back trips to the BIG EAST tournament, as the Bulls made their first appearance in 2007.

The Bulls were impressive in their first exhibition match as they defeated 2007 NCAA qualifier, UCF, 1-0 on Aug. 16. In the match, freshman Chelsea Klotz made her presence known early as she pushed across the only goal of the match just minutes into the game. Junior Mallori Lofton-Malachi and freshman Gaby Garton combined for a shutout. Lofton-Malachi stopped five shots and Garton had three saves. more

 

Gator Soccer Player Lauren Hyde on 2008 Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy Watch List
 

Junior All-American Lauren Hyde of the University of Florida is among the 47 players included in the Women's 2008 Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy Watch List released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) today.

Hyde earned a spot on the 2007 NSCAA All-America third team as a sophomore. She made her second consecutive appearance on the All-Southeastern first-team in 2007. Hyde led the Gators in minutes played from her center back position as both a freshman and sophomore, averaging more than 91 minutes per match in 2006 and 2007. Her five assists tied for second among the 2007 Gators. Hyde was also part of the 2007 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. more

 

UNF prepares for season opener

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Learning from mistakes and bouncing back quickly will be key points for the Rachael Howard 2007University of North Florida women’s soccer team this week as the Lady Ospreys prepare for their first two regular season matches, including the team’s home opener.

 

Schedule:

UNF (0-0) visits Tampa, Fla. where it takes on the University of South Florida (1-0) on Friday, Aug. 22 at 5 p.m. to begin the 2008 season – USF Live Stats.  On Sunday, Aug. 24, the College of Charleston visits the UNF campus for a noon kickoff to open the Lady Osprey home slate.

 

USF edged past UCF, 1-0, on Saturday – the same day Rollins College defeated UNF – 3-1.  UNF and USF met for the first and only time in 2005, and the Bulls outlasted the Lady Ospreys, 1-0.

 

Charleston (0-0) opens its season at Jacksonville on Aug. 22 before visiting UNF on Aug. 24.  The Cougars have faced the Lady Ospreys once – a 2006 meeting in South Carolina.  The Lady Ospreys won the contest, 2-1. more

There is always a lot of anticipation for the UCF women's soccer team to get a new season underway. That certainly is the case for 2008. Coming off their 12th NCAA Tournament appearance and a 15-4-4 record, the Knights have a lot to look forward to this year.

Heather Mitts Provides Assist on GWG
 

Angela Hucles scored twice and Lori Chalupny and Heather O’Reilly each scored once as the U.S. advanced to the gold medal match with a 4-2 victory against Japan at Beijing’s Workers’ Stadium on Monday.

Former Gator All-American Heather Mitts made her fifth consecutive start of the 2008 Olympic Games on the U.S. backline and added the assist on the U.S.'s game-winning goal in the 70th minute.

Since women’s soccer was added to the Olympic program in 1996, the U.S. is the only team that has advanced to all four Olympic Finals, and for the second consecutive time will play Brazil with the gold medal on the line. The U.S. defeated Brazil 2-1 in Athens to win their second gold medal. more

NEW ORLEANS, LA - The Sun Belt Conference released its 2008 Sun Belt Preseason Soccer Poll and All-Sun Belt Team Monday, with Denver receiving nine first-place votes by the league's 12 head coaches.

The Pioneers received 141 total points, followed by second-place North Texas with 128. Western Kentucky came in third (115), followed by Middle Tennessee (109), FAU (97), Louisiana-Lafayette (78), South Alabama (69), UALR (53) FIU (52), Louisiana-Monroe (39), Arkansas State (33) and Troy (22). more

 

USF Tally 1-0 Win Over UCF

TAMPA - Overcast skies turned to clear blue skies, as the University of South Florida women’s soccer team defeated the University of Central Florida, 1-0, in a friendly exhibition at the USF Training Ground.

“It was good to come out here and get a win,” said USF head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. “We had some early jitters. There were some positives and some negatives but coming out here and getting the win will give us confidence moving forward.”

The Bulls took the lead in the opening minutes of the match on an unassisted goal by freshman Chelsea Klotz.

“Chelsea (Klotz) did what we expect her to do,” said Schilte-Brown of the 2008 Florida High School 2A Player of the Year. “It was good to see her come in and have an impact right away.” more

 

Eagles Blank Sharks, 3-0 in Exhibition

Fort Myers, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University Womens Soccer team defeated Nova Southeastern in a 3-0 shutout on Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

Junior Amber McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.) sparked the Eagles offense with a goal just six minutes into the second half. Michelle Kuhnen (Eau Claire, Wis) sent a pass from midfield to McCall who was able to score from the top of box to put the Eagles ahead 1-0. more

 

UCF Drops Exhibition Match To USF

Aug. 16, 2008

TAMPA, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - In its only exhibition match of the preseason, the UCF women's soccer team lost a 1-0 decision to USF in Tampa Saturday. Goalkeepers Aline Reis and Lynzee Lee split time in net, while the Bulls scored the only goal in the first five minutes.

Even though the Knights came up on the short end, their exhibition record the previous two years did not indicate how those seasons evolved. In 2006, UCF went 1-1-0 in two scrimmages but finished with an 11-6-2 overall mark and a 7-1-1 record in Conference USA. Last season, the Black and Gold had a 0-1-1 preseason record only to advance to the NCAA Tournament Second Round and completed the campaign at 15-4-4 with a share of the C-USA regualar-season crown. more

 

Rollins Downs UNF 3-1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (August 16, 2008) – Chelsea Brady scored twice and Lindsay Giblin found the net once to lead the Rollins women’s soccer team in a 3-1 exhibition victory over the University of North Florida Saturday afternoon.

With just four days of practice under their belts, Rollins made an early mistake in the 14th minute with a foul in the penalty area that was converted into a successful PK by the Osprey’s Lauren Maze. more

Hellenic players Tirelli, Wilson among combine participantsTAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced Friday the local contingent of players with ties to Florida, including those from the W-League Tampa Bay Hellenic and Bradenton Academics, who will be participating in the upcoming inaugural USL W-League Combine that will give the players an opportunity to showcase their abilities for WPS and other coaches and scouts. Bush Resigns Position At RSL Florida
 
Adrian Bush has resigned his position as General Manager at RSL Florida Soccer Club, saying in an e-mail he felt it was the right time for him to step away from the program. Bush added that he wished nothing but the best for the club as it moved forward into a new season.

Bush, who is also the Men’s soccer coach at the University of Tampa, joined the Tampa Knights in 2006. Shortly after, the team changed its name to RSL Florida after Bush engineered a partnership with Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. more

Women's Soccer Hangs Tough With No.15 Texas A&M

Claudia Cardenas and the Golden Panthers gave the Aggies a hard-faught matchOn Thursday, the FIU women’s soccer team played a three-period, 105 minute exhibition match against the pre-season No.15 Aggies of Texas A&M. Although they dropped a 3-1 decision, the Golden Panthers more than held their own against the defending Big 12 regular season champions.

“It was a good chance to see where we are so early in the preseason,” said head coach Thomas Chestnutt. “A&M tested us in every facet of the game, but being able to stand up to that test this early in the preseason...the girls did a great job.”

Playing with just 16 players, FIU battled the Aggies to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes. However, the Aggies struck in the second minute of the second period, taking a 1-0 lead. more

 

Florida State Battled Georgia In Preseason Scrimmage

Tallahassee, Fla. - Florida State and Georgia took to the field on Friday in a preseason scrimmage at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The match featured three 30-minute segments with FSU winning segments one and three, while the Seminoles and Bulldogs played to a 1-1 tie in segment two.

"I think we got some pieces," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "It was kind of what I thought throughout the preseason. The name of the game for us is to create dangerous chances and I thought today we did okay with that."  more

 

 

U.S. Defeats Canada 2-1 2OT in Olympic Quarterfinals - Former Gator Heather Mitts Plays Entire Match

SHANGHAI, China (August 15, 2008) – A dramatic diving header goal from Natasha Kai in the 101st minute of overtime gave the U.S. Women’s Olympic Soccer Team a 2-1 victory against Canada and a berth to the semifinals of the 2008 Olympic Games.

Former Gator All-American Heather Mitts made her fourth consecutive start of the 2008 Olympic Games on the U.S. backline, playing the entire 120 minutes of the match.

UCF Meets USF in Exhibition Match Saturday in Tampa

Southeastern Conference Coaches Pick Gators to Defend League Soccer Title in 2008
 
Gainesville, FL - Thursday August 14, 2008

The University of Florida soccer program was picked by the league coaches to defend its Southeastern Conference team title in 2008, the conference office released Thursday morning.

Florida earned seven first-place votes, while Tennessee received three votes and Georgia collected two votes. The Gators claimed their eighth and second consecutive SEC title in 2007 with a 9-2 league record. Those three teams also rank in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll released earlier this week - No. 13 Tennessee, No. 18 Georgia and No. 20 Florida. more

The University of Florida soccer team is No. 20 on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll. 2007 NCAA champion Southern California tops the NSCAA preseason poll. This is the 12th consecutive season that Florida appears in the NSCAA preseason poll in the 14-year history of the program.

The Gators meet five NSCAA preseason ranked teams during the 2008 regular season - all in the month of September. Two early road matches are versus preseason top-10 teams - No. 4 Florida State (Sept. 7) and No. T-6 Portland (Sept. 19). The other three matches versus preseason top-25 teams are all at home - No. 19 Illinois (Sept. 12), No. 18 Georgia (Sept. 26) and No. 13 Tennessee (Sept. 28). more

Elizabeth Gowan - action 2007JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After leading the University of North Florida women’s soccer team in goals and assists last season, senior midfielder Elizabeth Gowan has been named to the 2008 Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference team.

 

“This honor shows that the other coaches in the conference are aware of her ability,” UNF head coach Linda Hamilton said.  “It is a tribute to all of her hard work and her success over the past seasons.” more

 

Hatters Tabbed Sixth in A-Sun Preseason Poll

Tessa Gavilsky and the Hatters have been picked to repeat in sixth place in the A-Sun.DeLand, Fla. – The Stetson women’s soccer team has been predicted to finish sixth in the 11-team Atlantic Sun conference race in 2008, the league office announced Tuesday.  The Hatters tied for sixth place last season at 6-5-0 in A-Sun games and were 8-10-1 overall.

 

The preseason poll bears a strong resemblance to the 2007 final standings as defending champion Kennesaw State was a unanimous pick to retain its crown.  Mercer and Florida Gulf Coast were tabbed to repeat their second and third place finishes, respectively, while ETSU was the pick for fourth place and Belmont for fifth.  Coming in behind Stetson, in order, were North Florida, Jacksonville, Campbell, USC Upstate and Lipscomb. more

 

Three Gator Soccer Players on 2008 Preseason All-SEC List

Three University of Florida soccer players are among the soccer coaches preseason All-Southeastern Conference team, the league office released Wednesday. Florida, the two-time defending SEC champions, led all teams with its three selections.

This is the second year for the preseason All-SEC team. The coaches preseason All-SEC team consists of a minimum of 11 players. Each SEC Head Soccer Coach voted for three forwards, three midfielders, three defenders, one goalkeeper and one at-large candidate. No ties were broken. Notre Dame And West Virginia Picked To Win 2008 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Divisional Titles

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Notre Dame and West Virginia have been tabbed as favorites in the 2008 BIG EAST preseason women’s soccer poll. The Irish received 15 first-place votes and were unanimously picked to win the National Division, while the Mountaineers were picked to win the American Division. Both programs have won their respective division titles the last three years. The votes were cast by the league’s 16 head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams. more
